Loren’s Badass Chick: Elaine Hammel

Loren's Badass Chick

This week’s Badass Chick is Elaine Hammel, creator of Girls at Work.

What. A. Badass. Elaine is a contractor who, 17 years ago, created the Girls at Work program which teaches women and girls girls how to use power tools and build things for themselves. Her mission is to build a world where every girl feels confident and capable. With the generosity of supporters, grants and fundraising events, Elaine offers eight-week programs where girls are able to learn about woodworking and put together their very own creation (like a lap desk, or a book shelf, etc). Often times, these young girls are at-risk girls who don’t come in with a lot of confidence… but after the eight weeks, they leave feeling empowered and energized, knowing that they built something from scratch all by themselves and can handle any obstacle that comes in their way.

My brief description of Girls at Work doesn’t do it justice, so I suggest you check out more of Elaine’s program here. She offers workshops for women and businesses as well! Also, there’s a fundraiser for Girls at Work  happening December 12th in case you are interested in supporting the program!

Loren’s Badass Chick of the Week highlights local women and girls giving back to the community, following their passion and/or breaking stereotypes. If YOU have a Badass Chick you want to see highlighted, email Loren@1033ampradio.com!
