To round out the month celebrating Breast Cancer Badass Chicks, we actually have a group of HONORARY Badass Chicks: the Newton Police Department. They've been proudly wearing and selling pink patches, which benefit women battling cancer.

Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker had become friends with former NBC 10 Boston reporter (and former Badass Chick!) Natasha Verma prior to her cancer treatment. Once he discovered she was on medical leave, the department vowed to help her any way they could. Soon thereafter, Natasha created Cap Wigs, which are baseball hats with real human hair wigs. Through her Verma Foundation, they are provided to women and girls battling cancer completely free of charge.

To help get involved, the Newton Police Department partnered with the Verma Foundation by wearing and selling pink patches for $10 a pop, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to making those Cap Wigs. This cause holds a special place in NPD's hearts not just because of their friendship with Natasha, but because of the incredible women in the Newton community and especially NPD's family, like Officer Ferolito's wife Jill, who is a cancer survivor.

Lieutenant Apotheker says that the department's mission is to get involved with the community in any and all ways. Helping to provide cap wigs brings dignity and self confidence back into a woman's life while she's facing such a trying time, and the pink patches are a small way to do that.

Loren's Badass Chick of the Week highlights local women and girls giving back to the community, following their passion and/or breaking stereotypes. If YOU have a Badass Chick you want to see highlighted, email Loren@1033ampradio.com!
