Loren's Badass Chick

Vicky and Betsy

This week's Badass Chick is Vicky Berry, creator of Central New England Equine Rescue

Vicky had been a horse lover her whole life and had passed that passion down to her daughters. One day, someone showed them a video of a horse in a slaughterhouse. Vicky was sickened and knew that she wanted to find a way to give back to the animals that her family loved so much.

Vicky and her daughter Betsy first began by rescuing two horses a year -- which they funded entirely on their own by working overtime, and by donations from family and friends. They worked hard to turn their passion project into a real non-profit organization, and soon two horses a year turned into over 250 horses from the US and Canada being saved over the course of the last 15 years. They rehabilitate these animals and find them suitable new homes. It's pretty amazing. Nowadays Vicky has over 25 volunteers helping her out and now that she's retired, she can give 100% of her time to the beautiful horses that she says have changed her life.

Vicky's hosting a fundraiser this weekend if you want to get involved:
