Loren's Badass Chick

Marti Sementelli

This week's Badass Chick is 25-year-old Marti Sementelli of Newton, the pitcher for the US Women's National Baseball team.

Marti grew up loving baseball and was in fact the only girl on her high school baseball team. After college, she decided to take a bunch of part-time jobs (many of which involve baseball, by the way!) so that she could also find time to play for the US Women's National Baseball team.

Only 20 women from all across the country are chosen to play for the team, and every other year they travel the world to represent the USA in the Women's Baseball World Cup. The team actually just got back and even though they lost the bronze medal, it was an amazing 10-inning game. Marti's been competing with the team since she was 16 and has won plenty of awards for her talents.

I love that Marti and her teammates are blazing a trail and breaking gender stereotypes left and right!

PS -- Yes, this is basically a 2018 version of A League of Their Own and yes, Marti and her teammates actually KNOW some of the real-life women who inspired that movie!!! Isn't that cool?!?!

Loren's Badass Chick of the Week highlights local women and girls giving back to the community, following their passion and/or breaking stereotypes. If YOU have a Badass Chick you want to see highlighted, email [email protected]!
