Loren's Badass Chick: Lindsay Ferraro

Domestic abuse survivor and all-around badass chick.

June 8, 2018

Lindsay Ferraro's story is pretty incredible and I hope I do it justice in sharing it with you.

Just four weeks after getting married to a man she had known since she was 14 years old, Lindsay's husband brutally assaulted her. Though her husband ended up being the one to call 911, Lindsay was in dire condition: she had four fractures to her head, she was in a coma and she was given 48 hours to live.

Amazingly, Lindsay kept fighting. For months, she was in a vegetative state. Then she became mildly conscious but was blind and unable to speak. Later, her condition deteriorated and hospice was called in, and her mother was making funeral arrangements for her.

On September 8th 2017, Lindsay opened her eyes. She nodded her head, moved her right hand and she later began speaking. Just under two years after her attack, Lindsay is now eating on her own, learning to play piano and even delivering mail at the hospital she's in because she got bored being there so she wanted a job!

Lindsay still has many things she needs to re-learn how to do. 20% of her brain was damaged, and while she cognitively understands everything happening around her, Lindsay still struggles with expressing herself the way she wants to. An artist and musician her whole life, Lindsay is finding comfort and therapy through those things again.

She is since divorced from her husband who is now in jail, and he himself is receiving the treatment that he needs. When I spoke with Lindsay and her mom, one of the things that stood out to me the most was the compassion that they have for her ex husband's family, understanding that it's two young lives that were significantly affected by his actions that night. Lindsay wants to find meaning out of what happened to her, and is bravely sharing her story in hope that no one else has to go through what she has gone through. Please join me in wishing a very happy birthday to Lindsay, who turns 28 on Tuesday (and follow her journey on Instagram!)!

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, help is available. Please go to TheHotline.org or call National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−7233.
