Loren's Badass Chick

This week's Badass Chick is MIT graduate student Katie Bouman, who led a team that created an algorithm that helped take the first picture of a black hole.

By now if you haven't heard about Katie and this infamous tweet, then I'm not sure what rock you're living under!!

The picture of this black hole made headlines over the last week and a half, and the tweet of Katie looking at the picture really captured such a special moment for her. While there were many, many scientists - both men and women! - who participated in making this possible, Katie became the face of it because of the picture shared on twitter. But it's very important to note that Katie had an integral role in this, because she led a team of researchers that developed an algorithm which helped make the picture possible. In all, these researchers had to synchronize eight radio telescopes on four different continents to make this happen. It took two years for four different imaging teams to put it all together and get the picture. Every single scientist and researcher who worked on this project is important. I also want to note that Katie's role as lead researcher is a shining example of a Badass Chick excelling in the STEM fields and I think she's setting a great example, for young women especially! Go Katie!
