Loren's Badass Chick

Julie & her brother Kevin

This week's Badass Chick is Julie Callahan, an incredibly strong girl who is raising awareness for EDS, the disorder she has and the disorder that ultimately caused life-ending symptoms for her brother Kevin who died at the age of 25.

EDS is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a group of disorders that affect the connective tissues that support your skin, bones, blood vessels, organs and tissues. Julie and her brother were both born with EDS -- something they genetically inherited from their mother. EDS has a ton of symptoms from non-life-threatening (like chronic fatigue, joint pain and body aches) to life-threatening symptoms (like the aneurism that ultimately led to her brother's passing). On top of the symptoms that most people can't see every day, anxiety often plays a huge role for people with EDS because their everyday aches and pains are not easily understood or believed by other people.

Julie is particularly badass because I greatly admire how she handles everything life has thrown at her. At the age of 24, in a span of just eight months, she lost her mother, her father and her brother. She relies upon her friends to be her support system and she recently decided to be more open about her struggle with EDS in hopes of helping other people who might be suffering as well. She's a warm, bubbly person and I'm so happy to call her a Badass Chick!
