To culminate Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week (which is a cause that is near and dear to my heart), this week's Badass Chick is Jamie Belsito of the North Shore. She's working to change the way women are cared for after having a baby.

Jamie is a mother of two girls, and in addition to having a traumatic birth experience, she suffered greatly from postpartum depression (PPD), which is the number one complication of childbirth. When she consulted with her doctor, her doctor whispered the words "postpartum depression" and it struck a cord: why are we whispering about such a crucial topic?! She realized there was a significant lack of resources for postpartum women. Having been a federal legislative analyst, she knew that there had to be a way to improve women's access to mental and physical care. So she went to work.

Jamie is a motivational speaker and policy advocate who travels throughout not only Massachusetts but to DC as well, telling her story in hopes of creating federal change. She is also a commissioner with the Ellen Story Postpartum Depression Commission for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She has teamed up with the Mass PPD Fund (Massachusetts Postpartum Depression Fund) and next Saturday May 11th, Jamie will be sharing her story at their health and wellness fundraising event at Healthworks Chestnut Hill. There will be yoga, a celebrity chef and raffle prizes. The money raised will go to the Mass PPD Fund to invest in services that will reach more moms in need.
