Loren's Badass Chick

Ivy Lawson

This week's Badass Chick is Ivy Lawson, owner of Ivyee's in the North End, which makes chemical-free, raw honey-based beauty products. Oh, and the coolest thing? Ivy made history and is the first black business owner in the North End.

Ivy worked as a software engineer in corporate America for almost 20 years until she decided she wanted to follow her entrepreneurial passion. She was very interested in natural products because her oldest son had recently developed allergies, and after a series of serendipitous events, Ivy moved her family to Jamaica and learned everything there was to know about bee farming.

She started making raw honey and selling it at Whole Foods, and eventually developed her own line of products. Ivy moved back to Boston, watched her business grow and decided to open up a brick-and-mortar shop, becoming the first black business owner in the North End this past November. Mayor Marty Walsh was on hand to celebrate at the ribbon cutting ceremony, and now relies upon her shampoo to keep his hair looking good.

I love that Ivy followed her passion and broke barriers in doing so! If you want to learn more about Ivy, check out her Boston.com interview, her JewishBoston.com interview and her feature on NBC 10 which is how I first heard of her!
