Loren's Badass Chick

Dr. Erika Angle

This week's Badass Chick is Dr. Erika Angle. She's the CEO/co-founder of Ixcela, the creator of Science from Scientists and a former beauty queen. She's a total badass.

Dr. Angle has a really cool story: she's the daughter of immigrants and is living the American Dream. At a very young age, her parents instilled in her the importance of volunteerism, and she has always been interested in science. So it's no surprise that after attending MIT & BU that she found herself creating Ixcela, a biotech company that is helping to improve gut health. And it's also no surprise that Erika is trying to encourage young kids to stay interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) by creating Science from Scientists, a non-profit organization which brings real scientists into the classroom for hands-on, fun learning activities. In just 16 years, Science from Scientists has become so successful that the curriculum is actually featured at Disney's Spectaculab in Epcot Center, with a 25 minute stage show happening 5 times a day, 7 days a week. Pretty awesome. I also think it's cool to mention that Erika is Miss Massachusetts America 2004, and she decided to compete because it brought her out of her comfort zone and taught her poise, confidence and excellent communication skills.

It's clear that Dr. Angle is not at all a stereotype of the science world or the pageant world: she doesn't fit a particular mold and she is incredibly well-rounded. She's as smart as she is beautiful and her heart is in the right place since she focuses so much on volunteerism, and that makes her an incredibly Badass Chick!
