Loren's Badass Chick

Ariana Mancuso

In honor of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, this week's Badass Chick is Ariana Mancuso. She's a two-time sexual assault survivor and creator of the Teal Warrior Project, working to prevent other people from going through what she went through.

When Ariana was just 13, she was sexually assaulted. She didn't tell anyone besides a close friend who encouraged her to come forward with her story. Just as the healing process was starting to begin, Ariana was assaulted again at the age of 14. Instead of remaining silent, Ariana spoke up. She brought charges against both men -- one, a cousin of her boyfriend and the other, a family friend -- and though neither one of them went to jail, they both received probation for their actions.

Ariana's story is way more common than any of us realize, mostly because it's extremely difficult for any victim to talk about. Thankfully, Ariana is standing up and wearing her teal ribbon proudly, a color that signifies she's a domestic/sexual assault survivor. She's also completed a Victim Advocacy course at Bridgewater State University, is raising money for the cause and collecting donations for shelters to ensure that other people know that they're not alone.
