Loren's Badass Chick

This week's Badass Chick is Margarita Polanco, the Trade Diversity Officer for Suffolk who is working to bring more job training and opportunities to women and minorities within the construction industry.

I love Margarita's story because she is giving back to a city that gave her so much: Boston! The Dorchester native, who nows lives in Roxbury, went through Boston's Year Up program, which fosters development and training for professionals 18-24 years old. After snagging her job at Suffolk a few years later, she came across a program to partner with through the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development called City Academy. It offers job training for those interested in construction opportunities or working for the City of Boston. For a long time, city residents had a hard time getting that training because it took place in Tewksbury, which isn't easy to get to. So Margarita worked with the city and Massport to brainstorm closer training opportunities for individuals -- and it worked! 100% of the graduating cycle 1 class ended up getting a job. As for the future, she is currently working with the city to move the job training site to the Seaport in an effort to make it more attainable for city residents.

It's really inspiring to see how much Margarita is giving back to and investing in a community that gave her so much. As she says, "you gotta reach back, lend out a hand, and still be able to climb -- you gotta bring people with you."
