Dear Badass Chick,
I define “Badass Chick” as a woman or girl following her passion, giving back to the community and/or breaking stereotypes. If you’re reading this, then I’m confident that’s you! Over the years, I’ve had the honor to meet some incredibly talented Badass Chicks while researching for my weekly segment that airs every Friday at 7:10a on the TJ Show. All of these women have stuck with me. They’ve taken risks, they’ve followed their gut, and they’re making impacts that will leave this world a better place than the way they found it. To celebrate them, I’ve highlighted ten Badass Chicks here whose goods and services will make perfect gifts for your family and friends this holiday season. Thank you for listening to the show and letting me tell these stories.
With lots of love,
Kick It by Eliza
Gift your fit friends an empowering fitness routine that fosters a seriously kick-ass, girl power environment. Suggested gift: new client special, buy one class get one free — $20 — or class packs in multiples of 5 or 10 — $80, $150 respectively.
Eliza Shirazi is a force to be reckoned with. Shortly after graduating from UMass, Eliza created her signature kick boxing/dance program that has taken Boston by storm. In the last few months, she’s expanded her Fempire (amazing, right?) to New York, has been featured in Seventeen Magazine, and most recently was named one of Self Magazine’s 10 New Workout Classes and Gyms. To top it off, she’s constantly holding fundraising classes for every charity you can think of. She’s a kind soul who screams girl power (I can vouch that her classes are insanely fun and you’ll leave feeling not just healthier, but incredibly empowered)… and you can’t get more Badass Chick than that.
Booty by Brabants
The fitness fanatic in your life will love this stylish & sexy workout gear… and so will your lazy friend who just loves wearing leggings every day like me. Suggested gift: Booty by Brabants Croco Skin Leggings — $85.
Less than four years ago, Kelly Brabants took a hint from her mom’s native country of Brazil and created some seriously fabulous leggings. Word of her leggings spread like wildfire, and now Kelly has an entire line of workout clothes and swimwear that is both stylish and sexy. They make a perfect gift for any fitness fanatic in your life (or, if you’re like me, someone who just generally loves wearing leggings all. the. time). Kelly’s also got a booty-blasting workout routine that’s beloved by Bostonians, and has somehow found time to raise over $70,000 for breast cancer research. Badass indeed.
Top Shelf Cookies
Show your Boston pride and satisfy your host’s sweet tooth (or your own!) with these yummy, Boston-centric homemade cookies. Suggested gift: beer cookies assortment — $32 — or Cookie of the Month club subscription — $59.95+.
Heather baked her (now signature Black & Gold) cookies for friends before each Bruins’ home game, and the year she began that tradition, they won the Stanley Cup. Her friends kept encouraging her to drop her full-time job and create a cookie business, so eventually she did just that. She makes cookies at a community kitchen in Dorchester and they’re beaming with Boston Pride: Green Monster Mint (my personal favorites), Boston Lager chocolate chip (@chocolatechipboston rated them a solid 8.25!), and her signature Black & Golds are among her many cookies. She sells online, at farmer’s markets and in Boston Public Market this weekend.
Harvard Sweet Boutique
Show the host of your holiday party that you think they’re the sweetest by bringing a bakery gift (or, just treat yourself because YOLO). Suggested gift: Candy Cane Dark Chocolate Peppermint Bark — $28
Sue owns Harvard Sweet Boutique in Hudson (she also sells online). As a diabetic, she recognized how important it is for patients to know the exact amount of carbs in their sweets. So, working with her doctors at Joslin Diabetes Center, she removed the guessing game and has perfected recipes for more than a dozen varieties of low-carb goodies. Also, Sue and her daughter ran the Boston Marathon this year in support of Team Joslin. Hell yeah!
Strong Girl Vibes
I don’t know a single girl who couldn’t benefit from some motivational wall art or a super-inspiring journal. Suggested gift: vegan leather journal with motivational quote — $16.
A single mom and graphic designer, AC knows how important it is to instill a strong sense of self in little girls and to support other women. So, she took her skills over to Etsy to offer unique prints and journals to spread the love and encouragement. Love it!
Pink Truck Designs
For the little girls and boys (and adults!) in your life who love trucks… and also the color pink. Suggested gift: pink 4×4 unisex tee — $27.
Dana got tired of shopping in the boys section just so that her girls could wear shirts with trucks on them. She created Pink Truck Designs, which features pink trucks, bikes, tugboats, campers, diggers, etc. on them. They’re gender-neutral and breaking archaic stereotypes, so I love them. Plus, Dana’s a former Internet Crimes Against Children prosecutor, so a percentage of her proceeds goes to the Hero Project which saves children from abuse and exploitation. I dare you to find me something more badass than that.
The Willie Wags
This subscription box service is perfect for the badass chick in your life who wants to support women entrepreneurs. Suggested gift: subscriptions vary — $59.99+ — or DYI cheese making kit — $50.
The daughter of small business owners and a small business owner herself, Jamie Clark created the Willie Wags subscription box as a way to highlight the goods of women entrepreneurs and expand their visibility all across the country. Each month, you’ll end up with a box at your front door, curated with items sold by women-owned businesses. Jamie also sells their items online and in her brick & mortar store in Maine, and she also gives back to these businesses by granting their Willie Wishes (example: if a bakery needs a new mixer, the Willie Wags will gift it to them). Can’t get much better than that!
The Pierce Sisters
4 Good Vibes
This is the best place to get handcrafted goods made by local artists. The store screams positivity, happiness and self-discovery. Suggested gift: custom wine bags — $20 — “Tom Brady is the sweet in my tea” tea spoon — $15.
Created just this past fall by four sisters, their shop in Somerville has everything you can think of for every person on your list this holiday season. The girls’ mom, a two-time cancer fighter, inspired the girls to open the shop because it’s been a pipe dream of theirs for years. There’s no time like the present to follow your dreams, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.
Taryn & Piper Crotty
For the stylish little lady in your life who knows accessories are where it’s at. Suggested gift: various styles of headbands can be purchased in Scituate, Cohasset and Hingham.
Created by 5-year-old Piper (who is now 9!) and her mom Taryn, these hand-made headbands make perfect gifts. Taryn used to make headbands for Piper and other kids started loving them… and Piper herself started to become interested in making them with her mom. Hence, Piper’s Headbands was born! The mother/daughter duo make the headbands in their basement and sell them in local shops and at local farmer’s markets. The best part? Piper often donates her earnings to charity to give back.
Megan Graham Beauty
Gather your ladies and treat yourselves to a day of pampering. Suggested gift: Kerastase treatment — $40 — or their Beauty & Fitness Concierge Service Consultation — $500.
After having worked in the beauty industry for years, Megan decided to take a leap and open her very own salon on Newbury Street. She strives to make every woman be the best version of themselves. This holiday season, Megan held a toy and coat drive for local organizations and offered anyone who participated a free Kerastase treatment. Plus, Megan has won Boston Magazine’s “Best Colorist” award twice! I love that she took a risk, is following her passion and giving back to her local community!
