This week’s Badass Chick is the final installment of our Badass Chick Holiday Gift Guide: Heather Yunger of Top Shelf Cookies.
A die-hard Bostonian with season tickets to the Bruins, Heather used to bake cookies before every single home game, and it was tradition that she would bring them to her favorite bar while pregaming. The year that she began doing this, the Bruins won the Stanley Cup. (Coincidence? I think not.) Her friends told her how great her cookies are, so she decided to take a leap of faith and open up her own cookie business. To achieve her dream, she worked overtime at her job to get herself financially stable, and then quit to go work at a bakery for $10 an hour to make sure that this was the life for her.
Nowadays, Top Shelf Cookies (named because you need to keep them on the top shelf and out of sight from everyone else in your house) are made at the Commonwealth Kitchen in Dorchester by Heather. She’s got tons of amazing cookies like Green Monster Mint (my personal favorite), Boston Lager chocolate chip (rated a solid 8.25 by Producer Matt’s @ChocolateChipBoston account) and her signature Black & Golds (the Bruins cookie that started it all), among many others. She sells online, at farmer’s markets and also will be at TJ’s favorite spot, Boston Public Market, this Saturday and Sunday.
