This week’s Badass Chick is Gina Scaramella, the executive director of the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.
Gina’s got a great story: she went from volunteering at BARCC back in 1989 to running it by 2003. She worked as a hotline counselor for two years, and quickly realized that this is what she wanted to do with her life. So, she went back to school for social work and by 1995 was asked to work at BARCC full-time. In 2003, she was promoted to executive director and has been there ever since.
Gina’s favorite part about working at the greater Boston area’s only rape crisis center providing comprehensive, free services to those in need is the fact that she really gets to learn from these survivors. She listens, identifies what she can do to make a difference, and effects policy change to truly make a difference.
BARCC’s annual Champion for Change gala & auction is set for tonight if you’re interested in checking it out. They’ve raised over a quarter of a million dollars through this event over the years.
