This week’s Breast Cancer Badass Chick is Holly Walton of Wilmington, creator of Heaps of Hope: a non-profit organization that helps women undergoing breast cancer treatment.
In January of 2008, Holly was diagnosed with Stage 2A breast cancer. She underwent chemo and radiation, and was lucky enough to have an amazing network of family and friends to rely on during the process. Every so often while she was at chemo, however, she would notice women who were there by themselves. Holly always wondered if that was by choice or not… so for the women who didn’t have a great support system like she had, Holly created Heaps of Hope. It helps pay for transportation costs, prescriptions, hospital bills, integrative therapies, groceries and anything else that these women may need assistance with. There is no paid staff and all of the money goes directly to women who need it. Just this past month alone, she handed out 78 gift cards.
Today, for the seventh year in a row, Heaps of Hope is participating in the Be Bold, Be Bald campaign which raises money by having participants wear a bald cap for the day. Participants are sponsored by family and friends (etc), and in the last six years, Heaps of Hope has raised $70k with the campaign.
I love that not only is Holly a fighter for her own life, but she’s fighting for other women’s lives as well!
