This week’s Badass Chick is Kim Boerrigter, a freshman at Harvard attending on a full scholarship.
Kim’s got a pretty great story. Kim came to the US from Germany in 2003. She was raised by a single mom in Newark, NJ – an impoverished and dangerous city. When she was 12, she got really into crime shows like NCIS and developed a genuine interest in science. While in school, she conducted and presented an enzyme study, and also decided that she wants to be a forensic pathologist so that she can help people in neighborhoods like the one she grew up in. Kim says she’s been to too many funerals and has seen too many domestic violence incidents in her hometown, so she wants to work in forensic pathology so she can help bring closure to victims and their families.
Thanks to the “superhuman dedication to education” (her words!) from her math teacher Mr. Murray (and thanks to her 4.2 GPA and valedictorian status!), Kim felt confident to apply to Harvard… and look — now she has a full ride! Looks like she’s well on her way to becoming that forensic scientist she’s always wanted to be!
