The Chainsmokers Debut Heartbreaking ‘The One’

By Rami Abou-Sabe

Absent of the freewheeling spirit that dominates much of their music, The Chainsmokers have released a slow-burning breakup ballad. “The One” features the duo’s signature woozy vocals and lazy beats, but pulls the tempo way down and lays on the heartbreak.

No more sheet-pulling and Land Rovers for Alex Pall and Drew Taggart. The hit-making duo instead broach the subject of lost love, and inevitable regret. “Down and down we go / And we’ll torch this place we know / Before one of us takes a chance / And breaks this, I won’t be the one,” Taggart sings over a bed of sampled vocal harmonies and delicate piano.

Listen to the full song up top. The Chainsmokers debut album Memories… Do Not Open is due April 7.
