As The Voice returns this week, contestant Mark Isaiah has delivered the performance of the season.

Isaiah, 19, recounts battling weight and confidence issues as a child that prevented him from performing publicly. The slimmed-down singer shows no signs of hesitation as he rolls through Shawn Mendes‘ smash hit “Mercy.” The lively performance manages to turn the chairs of both Gwen Stefani and Adam Levine, who battle valiantly over the young musician.

While the performance gets an impressive response from the crowd, Isaiah’s vocals are so spot-on they often border on mimicry. Both Levine and Stefani acknowledge how “modern” his sound is, and one thing is clear – Isaiah’s tone is the most radio-friendly of any contestant thus far.

Season 12 of The Voice returns tonight (Feb. 28) on NBC for another round of blind auditions. Check out the performance up top.
