Previous Vanguard awards have gone to Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Beyoncé.

Today at noon, Rihanna tweeted, “Honored to take the #VMAs stage as your video #VANGUARD award recipient LIVE from NYC on August 28!”

Rihanna has released a string of successful and provocative videos over the course of her career. In her most recent clip for “Needed Me,” which was directed by experimental filmmaker Harmony Korine, she plays an assassin with a taste for revenge. The song is featured on her latest album ANTI, which hit retailers January 28.

So far, Rihanna is the only performer announced to play at the 2016 Video Music Awards, which will be held this year at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
