This week’s Badass Chick is 21-year-old Sara Volz, an MIT grad who is blazing trails and breaking stereotypes in the male-dominated STEM field.
Sara has always liked science and participated in her first science fair in kindergarten. She then continued to do regional, state and international science fairs, and discovered her desire to simply figure out how the universe works (“simply” – ha!). Sara continued to study the sciences and eventually did a great experiment involving algae which helped put her on the map at a very young age. She won Intel’s 2013 Science Talent Search and did her undergraduate studies at MIT where she studied genome editing, and has been highlighted in Glamour Magazine for all of her work thus far.
Sara has plans to head to grad school to get her PhD in biochemistry and biophysics. She has no plans to stop any time soon – she wants to earn a living by conducting research. I love that Sara is following her passion and blazing a trail in an industry predominantly lead by men!
