Loren’s Badass Chick: Alicia Gentile

This week’s Badass Chick is Alicia Gentile, a high school student who actually already graduated from college!

Alicia is an 18-year-old senior at Nashoba Valley Technical School who has been taking college classes at Middlesex Community College since she was a sophomore. Alicia always found her studies to be pretty easy – she averaged a 99.6 at her high school. After some major family hardships, and wanting more of a challenge, Alicia decided she would enroll in college. She was doing it to set a great example for her younger brother, to prove that you are not your circumstances.

And what an example she set. She did so well in college that not only did she end up tutoring the older students, but she gave their commencement speech this past weekend. Oh, and she’s her high school’s valedictorian and will speak at her high school graduation tomorrow.

Alicia faced a lot of kids who didn’t quite get it, some of whom gave her a pretty hard time about her decision to care a lot about school and dive into adulthood much faster than other kids her age. But she didn’t care. She had a goal: to show her little brother that not only can you better yourself, but you are not the circumstances around you.

After graduation, Alicia is moving to San Francisco, where she’ll enroll in EMT classes and begin undergraduate work in January – her ultimate goal is to become a child oncologist. If only more people had the drive and the determination that Alicia has… this world would be a much better place!
