This week’s Badass Chick is Holly Rutko of Rehoboth, creator of Bella’s Ball in honor of her daughter who has Rett Syndrome.
When Holly’s daughter Bella was just two years old, doctors finally were able to pinpoint what they struggled to diagnose for quite some time: Bella has Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder that renders her unable to speak. In addition to affecting Bella’s ability to communicate, the disease has affected almost every other part of her body (her heart, her lungs, her mobility and more are all affected) and obviously became quite a challenge for her family to navigate in order to give Bella her best life. But her mom Holly never batted an eye, and went into overdrive to not only make Bella’s life full and beautiful, but also to find a cure for the disease.
Just a few short months ago, Holly decided she was going to throw a fundraiser in honor of Bella – aptly Bella’s Ball – and Holly pulled the entire thing together in less than one month. Last weekend, kids with Rett Syndrome, as well as their families and friends, gathered for what was basically a mini version of prom. Bella and her friends had a wonderful time and at the end of the night, Holly had raised just under $5,000 for the cause. Holly is determined to make it an annual tradition and wants to open it up to children with other disabilities as well.
I love that, when faced with devastating news, Holly decided to go above and beyond to provide hope for not only her daughter, but all other kids suffering from Rett Syndrome as well.
