This week’s Badass Chick is Catherine D’Amato, the President & CEO of The Greater Boston Food Bank.
When Catherine was little, her parents owned a restaurant where they vowed never to turn away someone who couldn’t pay for their food. Keeping this in mind, as Catherine grew up, she studied theology and began working as a church secretary. Part of her job at the church was to supply food from the church’s cupboard to anyone who came in asking for it. Noticing that many people were in need, she worked with surrounding churches, synagogues and mosques to create an emergency food box. Her ideas grew, and soon she created the San Francisco Food Bank in California.
For the past 20 years, Catherine has worked at The Greater Boston Food Bank, and has been the President & CEO for the last 18 years. She took the food bank from supplying 8 million pounds of food per year to supplying 54 million pounds of food per year, and she has no plans of stopping: her next goal is to provide at least one meal per day for those in need in eastern Massachusetts.
The Greater Boston Food Bank is hosting a Super Hunger Brunch at the end of January in restaurants all across Boston and the surrounding areas, where each dollar spent provides three meals to those who are hungry. Reservations are being accepted now, so check out their web site to brunch for a cause!
Catherine had a small passion instilled by her parents which grew into a hugely successful career of helping others, and for that, she is my Badass Chick!
