Loren’s Badass Chick: Anna Flaherty

This week’s Badass Chick is 10-year-old Anna Flaherty of Sudbury. Inspired by a book, she is collecting donations for underprivileged children whose parents can’t put food on the table.

Anna was reading Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate and learned about its main character who lived in poverty and didn’t always know where his next meal was coming from. This made Anna extremely uncomfortable. As she explained to me, she had never not had breakfast, lunch and dinner readily available to her and she was very upset learning that millions of children in the US alone aren’t as fortunate as she is (16 million/22% of all children, according to the National Center for Children in Poverty, actually). Her mom told Anna about a food drive that the author of the book and the book’s publisher was holding at book stores across the country: the author will visit the book store that collects the most amount of canned goods for families in need. Anna was ready to take action.

The Flaherty family belongs to a local volunteer center called Catching Joy which encourages children and their families to participate in hands-on volunteer opportunities together. So with the help of Catching Joy, Anna arranged for the Blue Bunny Books in Dedham to participate in the food drive, and canned goods will also be collected at the Performing Arts Connection on Union Avenue, and via a donation box on the Flaherty’s home porch (83 Fox Run Road, Sudbury) throughout the month of October.

I love that Anna recognized there are people much less fortunate than she is, and she is dedicating her time and her resources to changing that. For that, she is my Badass Chick of the week!
