This week’s Badass Chick is Dr. Atyia Martin, who Mayor Marty Walsh just named as Boston’s very first Chief Resilience Officer.
Boston was recently selected as one of 100 cities around the world to participate in the 100RC program, which was set up by the Rockefeller Foundation to help improve resilience in urban cities. Since so many disenfranchised areas are the ones most affected by “shocks” (natural disasters, terrorism, infrastructure failure, etc), her job will be to comprehensively survey these communities and develop a strategy to keep Boston prepared for such events. (Gotta be honest: I can’t fully do justice to all that her job entails, so you should check out this press release which really breaks it down!)
Dr. Martin is beyond prepared for this role, and is a complete badass. A life-long resident of Boston, her resume includes: the US Air Force, the NSA, the FBI, BPD, Boston Public Health Commission & the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management. Oh, and she’s a mother of 5. YUP.
I’m thrilled that our city has been given the opportunity to use all of Dr. Martin’s skills (seriously – think about ALL OF THE SKILLS she’s acquired over the years with that history!) to help improve our awesome city and make it #BostonStronger. And the fact that she’s been in roles – and taking on this role – that are often stereotyped as being held by a man? The icing on the cake!
