This week’s Badass Chick is Alexis Wilkinson, comedy writer and first African American female president of the Harvard Lampoon.
Growing up, Alexis was focused more on the sciences; she applied to Harvard as a biomedical engineering major. She was accepted into Harvard and MIT (!!!!!) her senior year of school, and decided to take it easy after she received word that she had a place to go for college. Alexis took the free time she had and decided to explore a passion she had been interested in: writing. She started a satirical newspaper with some friends, and as she began enjoying writing more and more, she entered a writing competition and won herself an award. Clearly, she didn’t just enjoy writing; she was good at writing.
Alexis switched her major at Harvard to Economics with a minor in psychology, and immediately auditioned to join Harvard’s esteemed comedy publication, the Harvard Lampoon. She didn’t make it the first time (most people don’t, actually) but that didn’t stop her from trying out again next semester and earning herself a spot. From there, she started writing for Cosmopolitan magazine and was named the first African American female president of the publication (and it had been around for 139 years!!!!!), with plans to hopefully continue in comedy full-time after she graduates next month.
I love the fact that Alexis is not only breaking records, but she followed her passion and is hell-bent on making a career out of it. For that, Alexis is my Badass Chick of the Week!
