This week’s Badass Chick is Harvard undergraduate Shree Bose, co-creator of Piper: a do-it-yourself computer that allows you to explore technology and engineering. (I’ll explain more, I promise!)
When she was little, Shree’s older brother introduced her to the world of microscopes, and she was immediately hooked. She grew an interest in science and technology, and was even named the winner of Google’s global science fair in high school, thanks to a study she conducted about cancer after her grandfather passed away from the disease.
Now at Harvard studying molecular and cellular biology (!!!!), Shree is the co-creator of Piper, which is an amazing way to get kids (8+) interested in learning about science. It’s a kit that allows you to build your own computer, and then play a Minecraft game. From there, kids use other materials provided in the kit to build things that will allow them to continue playing the game. The point of Piper is to make it easy for kids to get their hands on technology, and to encourage playful learning. Investors were so impressed with her idea that Shree’s Kickstarter reached its goal of $50,000 in just THREE days. By the time it closed, $280,000 was donated (UNBELIEVABLE!). They’re set to start production soon.
I love the fact that Shree is trying to make technology more attainable for the everyday person (kids especially!), and allowing them to have fun at the same time. Shree’s only 21… and considering the fact that she’s done so much in such a short period of time, there is no doubt Shree will be ruling the world one day. Bonus: she’s an absolute sweetheart!
