This week’s Badass Chick is Erica Soma, a personal trainer in Boston who is hoping to revolutionize pre- and post-natal fitness.
During Erica’s exercise science and public health studies, she had always heard her teachers refer to pre- and post-natal fitness as “the exception to the rule,” so she wanted to learn more about that. Her 30-page graduate thesis focused on the ins and outs of training pregnant women and new moms, and she spent lots of time researching the “exceptions to the rule.” Upon completion, she started teaching mom-focused fitness classes at her gym and realized that her classes were spreading by word of mouth like wildfire. A light bulb went off in her head: we need an industry-standard, pre- and post-natal fitness program, and I’m going to create it.
So, Erica quit her job at the gym and has since opened her own business, Erica Soma Fitness. She works with clients at various locations throughout the city and focuses on pregnant women and women who recently gave birth. One of the coolest things about her platform is that new moms are welcome to bring their kids to class; not only do a lot of Erica’s classes offer child care, but the babies are actually incorporated into the workout!
Erica’s goal is to create the “Zumba” of pre- and post-natal fitness; a fitness program and certification that is an industry standard, so that new moms can walk into any of her classes taught by instructors all across the country and know exactly what they’re getting.
I love that Erica is so passionate about her field and is working hard to become the next big thing in fitness!
