This week’s Badass Chick is actually a husband-wife duo from Rutland who created an orphanage in Haiti in honor of their daughter, Britney, who died in the Haiti earth quake five years ago. Len and Cherylann Gengel created Be Like Brit, a non-profit orphanage which houses 66 children who, like the Gengels, have lost their loved ones or came from an unsafe home situation.
When Brit was just 19, she and her Lynn University students traveled to Haiti to work with children. While the Gengels initially got word that Brit was safe, it took them 33 days to recover her remains. The last text message Brit sent to her parents described how much she loved Haiti and the children, and how badly she wanted to open her own orphanage. Since then, the couple has worked tirelessly to honor Brit’s life and give life and love to those who need it most. They’ve written a book, created a non-profit and opened the orphanage. What’s cool about the orphanage is that it’s in the shape of a B, and houses 33 girls and 33 boys…one for each day Brit was missing.
What I love so much is that Len and Cherylann raised their very own Badass Chick who had a passion for helping others, and despite facing the most painful loss a parent could imagine, the two have found a way to honor their daughter and continue her legacy.
