This week’s Badass Chick is Taryn Crotty of Scituate. She, her 7-year-old daughter Piper and 5-year-old son Saxton have their very own headband-making business that started out as a hobby and now is a way to teach her kids about making money and creating a business.
When Piper was just 2, Taryn started making headbands for her. When Piper turned about 5 years old, she started getting interested in making the headbands, too. So Taryn saw this as a fun opportunity to teach Piper about money and being self-sufficient. She Piper pick out the headband patterns, construct them together in a workshop in their basement, and sell them at local farmers markets. Saxton started to get interested lately, and he is a big help with the glue and gemstone aspects of the headbands! Taryn said that not only does this help Piper and Saxton learn how to manage money, but it also helps them cultivate interpersonal skills when they’re working at the farmers markets. And, after each market, the family gets together to decide how to spend the money, which includes donations to local charities.
I think it’s badass that Taryn found a way to instill really awesome values in her kids, but still make it fun and creative. For that, Taryn is my Badass Chick of the Week!
