I first heard about Badass Chick Ashley Stanley when WCVB did a great profile on her non-profit Lovin’ Spoonfuls. So I called her up the next day and what do you know- she is AMAZING! To put it simply, Lovin’ Spoonfuls rescues good, quality produce that would ordinarily go in the trash and they deliver it to community organizations and resources where it will make the most impact. Every. Single. Weekday. For example, when Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods has extra produce that you or I didn’t buy, Ashley and her team will collect it and deliver it to a shelter like Pine Street Inn so that its residents can have a good, healthy meal.
Ashley is beyond cool. Before founding Lovin’ Spoonfuls in 2009, she had a job in fashion and began to wonder if what she was doing with her life was really making an impact. While she was sorting through that, she discovered and educated herself about how much food goes to waste on a daily basis (fact: 40% of food produced daily is wasted). So, she did more research and came up with a plan. She then called her cousin and the two went on their first mission to pick up extra produce at the Trader Joe’s in Coolidge Corner. Less than 5 years later, Lovin’ Spoonfuls is a registered non-profit with six employees rescuing and delivering food every single weekday, and they’ve rescued more than 1.2 million pounds of food.
Ashley’s hope is that food rescue becomes commonplace. Think of it like this: there was a time when recycling wasn’t “a thing,” and it was simply a movement. Now, it’s mandatory. Ashley hopes that food rescue will one day be the same way. She has taken a passion project to an entirely new level by creating Lovin’ Spoonfuls, and that is beyond badass.
